A lot of : can be used in all sentences, affirmative, negative and interrogative.
Much-many : are used in negative and interrogative sentences.
They are rarely used in affirmative sentences, except if they begin the sentence (see below).
Much is used with uncountable nouns (for example : much English)
Many is used with countable nouns (for example : many words).
Affirmative
We learn a lot of English.
I make a lot of mistakes.
BUT...
Much of our food is exported.
Many people drive too fast.
Negative
I don't know a lot of English.
I don't know much English.
I don't know a lot of words.
I don't know many words.
Interrogative
Do you learn a lot of English?
Do you know much English?
Do you make a lot of mistakes?
Do you make many mistakes?
Compare a lot of and a lot :
◊ Tom knows a lot of vocabulary.
◊ Tom is talkative. He talks a lot.
lots of 와 a lot of 는 수적개념과 양적개념 둘 다에 쓰입니다. 둘은 아무런 차이가 없습니다.
한편 many 수적개념, much 는 양적개념으로 쓰입니다.
'There are lots of cars'.
'There are a lot of cars'.
두 가지 형태 모두 올바른 문장입니다. 한편 실생활에서는 lots of 가 더 자연스럽게 많이 쓰입니다.
두 가지 모두 복수를 지칭하는 표현으로, 셀 수 있는 명사의 복수형이나, 셀 수 없는 명사와 함께 사용됩니다.
한편 주의하셔야할 건 동사의 사용입니다.
<셀 수 없는 명사일 경우>
셀 수 없는 명사일 경우 동사는 명사에 일치시켜서 단수 형태로 쓰셔야합니다.
'There is lots of water in the pool.' (셀 수 없는 명사 water와 함께 쓰인 경우)
='There is a lot of water in the pool.'
'A lot of time is wasted in meetings.' (셀 수 없는 명사 time이므로 동사는 is 가 됩니다.) =' Lots of time is wasted in meetings.'
<셀 수 있는 복수명사의 경우>
복수명사일 경우 동사는 명사에 일치시켜서 복수 형태로 쓰셔야합니다.
'A lot of people were affected by the storm.' (복수명사 people와 함께 쓰인 경우)
'There are lots of interesting things to do here. (복수명사 interesting things 과 함께 사용되었고 주어 things가 복수이므로 동사 또한 복수 형태인 are가 사용됩니다.)
a number of = many 로 많은 이라는 의미입니다.
셀 수 있는 명사 앞에 쓰므로 뒤에는 복수명사가 옵니다.
이와는 달리
the number of 는 '~의 수'라는 의미로 뒤에는 단수명사와 복수명사 모두 올 수 있습니다.
Tell me [a number of / the number of] guests and I will calculate how many plates and cups we need.
이 문장을 보면 단수냐 복수냐의 수일치가 아닌 a number of와 the number of의 차이를 비교하고 있습니다.
Tell me [a number of / the number of] guests 와
I will calculate how many plates and cups we need.
라는 2개의 문장이 등위접속사 and 로 대등하게 연결된 문장입니다.
Tell me [a number of / the number of] guests
나에게 많은 손님들(a number of guests)을 말해주세요.
나에게 손님들의 수(the number of guests)를 말해주세요.
당연히 뒤에 있는 '나에게 손님들의 수를 말해주세요.'가 맞겠죠?
그래서 이 경우에는 the number of를 사용하게 됩니다.
