◊ Other can also be used as a pronoun to refer to things or people.
- 80% of the students arrive on time.
- The others ( = the other students) are always late.
◊ Another expresses quantity, something extra or additional.
- There are 6 people for dinner but there are only 5 plates.
We need another plate.
other 는 "'다른, 또 다른" 이란 의미로 보통 같은 종류(kind, type)의 다른 (different) 것을 의미합니다.
other 에 단순히 an 이 붙던 것이, 완전히 붙으면서, 하나의 단어로 바뀐 것이 another 일 뿐입니다.
즉 other 의 의미에, 하나를 뜻하는 an 이 붙었기 때문에, other 과 대조하여, another를 단수 취급하게 되는 것입니다.
another 와 other는 둘 다 형용사로 사용될 수 있는데, another 는 앞 서 설명했듯이, 앞에 an 이 이미 있기 때문에 단수밖에 오지 못하고, 똑같은 이유로, other 앞에는 an 이 없는 경우이므로 복수가 와야 하는 것이 기본입니다.
다만 가끔씩 정관사인 the 가 붙는 경우가 있는데.
the(정관사) 는 an(부정관사) 과는 달리, 이미 정해져 있는 (이미 다 알고 있는 ) 것을 뜻하는 것으로 the other 뒤에는 단수나 복수 둘 다 올 수 있습니다.
대명사로 사용되는 경우는 항상 one 과 함께 사용하여, 불특정 집단인지, 특정 집단인지를 두고 구별하는 경우가 나옵니다.
하나는 one 이라고 하고, 막연한 다른 하나는 another, 그렇지 않은 하나는 the other 인 것입니다.
예를 들어
어느 사람은 A가 좋다고 하고, 다른 사람은 B가 좋다고 합니다. 라는 말을 한다면
One man likes A, another (man) likes B를 쓰면 된다.
하지만, 응답자 두 명 중에 한명은 A를, 나머지 한명은 B를 좋다고 했다면
Of the two, one likes A, the other like B 라고 하면 되는 것입니다.
