Some is used in affirmative sentences, and also when asking for or offering something.
Any is used in negative and interrogative sentences.
A few is used with countable nouns : a few apples.
A little is used with uncountable nouns : a little cheese.
- Affirmative
There are some apples.
(We don't know how many, but the bowl is not empty)
We can also say :
There are a few apples, not many, a small number.
There is a little cheese.
- Negative
There aren't any apples.
(The bowl is empty)
There aren't many apples
There isn't much cheese
Interrogative
Are there any apples?
(We want to know if the bowl contains apples)
Are there many apples?
Is there much cheese?
N.B. Asking and Offering: Can I have/would you like some coffee?
There is any water in the glass.
일단 a few는 셀 수 있는 명사, a little은 셀 수 없는 명사에 사용.
물은 셀 수 없는 명사니까 a little water라고 표현이 가능합니다.
any는 보통 의문문이나 부정문에서 쓰입니다.
긍정문에서도 쓰이지만 그럴 경우는 강조하거나 어떤 이라는 의미가 있습니다.
There is any water in the glass. 이것은 매우 부자연스러운 문장입니다. 굳이 해석을 한다며 잔에 어떤 물이라도 있다. 뭐 이런 뜻이 되는데, There is not any water 혹은 Is there any water?라고 하는 표현이 더 어울립니다.
There are a few students in the classroom.
There are a little students in the classroom.
student는 셀 수 있는 명사이기 때문에 a little을 쓰면 안 됩니다.
a few는 조금이라는 뜻이지 있다 라는 동사의 뜻까지 포함하는 것이 아닙니다.
You may meet a few good men. 조금의 (약간의) 좋은 사람들을 만날 것이다.
A few people like the music. 소수의 사람만 그 음악을 좋아한다.
Is there any water in the glass?
Is there a little water in the glass?
이런 식의 표현에선 any는 의문문에, a little는 일반문에 쓰인다고 보시면 됩니다.
There are a few students in the classroom.
There are some students in the classroom.
이런 경우에 some은 a few보단 숫자적으로 어감이 덜한 표현입니다.
몇 명의 학생들 (보통 10명 이하 정도??) 뭐 이정도의 감을 뜻하는 표현으로 a few라고 많이 씁니다.
some은 이런 숫자적인 표현으론 잘 안 씁니다. 예를 들어 어떤 학생들은 걸어서오고 어떤 학생들은 차를 타고 온다와 같이 그룹을 설명하는 사실적 묘사에 많이 쓰입니다. 이때에도 숫자를 강조를 하면서 차를 타고 오는 학생이 월등히 많고 걸어오는 학생들은 극소수 몇 명이다 그러면 걸어오는 학생들에 some보단 a few를 쓰겠지요.
